The Gap

Forests follow structures.
They grow in patterns, support one another,
preserve what has proven stable.
Sometimes a single tree is removed.
Not because it is diseased.
Not because it is weak.
But because it does not fit into the existing order.
A tree that grows differently
draws light to itself,
changes the balance,
makes visible what would otherwise remain hidden.
It does not fall because it is wrong.
It falls because its presence would require change.
Afterwards, the forest appears calm again.
Ordered.
Unobtrusive.
But the ground remembers.
And the gap remains.
